Role

Generative Design - EDD

A purpose driven role for you

To establish and transition HMCL Engine Design & Validation department from a reactive validation mindset to a proactive Generative Synthesis approach, using AI-driven algorithms to explore design iterations across Structural, CFD, Heat transfer and MBD domains simultaneously. By bridging existing high-fidelity verticals through Multidisciplinary Optimization (MDO), the vertical will eliminate manual design loops and "evolve" organic, bio mimetic engine architectures that push the absolute limits of physics. Ultimately, this requirement is the cornerstone of Department’s strategy to reduce physical prototyping by > 50%, while delivering world-class power density and fuel economy for the next generation of HEV platforms.

A Day in the life

∙ Topology & Lattice Optimization: Lead the light weighting of the Cylinder Head, Block, Head Cover, Crankcase and Crankcase covers using density-based and level-set methods.
∙ Generative Crank-Train Dynamics: Optimize the mass distribution of reciprocating components (pistons, con-rods) using generative design to reduce secondary imbalances and friction
∙ NVH & Fatigue Synthesis: Use generative patterns to "shape-tune" engine covers and brackets to shift natural frequencies away from firing frequencies, reducing radiated noise w/o adding mass.
∙ Adjoint-Based Flow Optimization: Implement adjoint solvers to "evolve" intake/exhaust port geometries and manifold runners for desired level of turbulence and flow capacity
∙ Conformal Thermal Management: Design generative cooling jackets and heat exchangers that provide localized high-heat-flux cooling while minimizing coolant pump parasitic losses.
∙ Aerothermal Integration: Optimize the engine bay airflow and under-hood thermal management using generative shape optimization to improve air flow at engine fins and / or heat exchangers

Academic Qualification & Experience

Desired Education Background: M.Tech in Automotive / Solid Mechanics / Thermal / Design, from IITs / IISc
Experience Required: 11 – 15 years. Of Automotive R&D experience with Min. 5 years of relevant experience

Technical Skills/Knowledge

Ability to build Surrogate Models and Physics-Informed Neural Networks (PINNs) to replace slow 3D simulations.
∙ Competency in linking 1D thermodynamic cycle simulation results to 3D generative design constraints. ∙ Ability to optimize Crank-train and Valve-train dynamics for friction reduction and NVH refinement. ∙ Skill in using generative patterns to tune natural frequencies and minimize radiated noise
